It is not just JWs learning TTATT who behave in this way. UBMs may start from relative ignorance about the organisation, thinking it is an out there religion which is basically benign. But after a while the UBM starts to see the toxicity and then they do some research on the internet and learn TTATT and immediately want to share it with the indoctrinated spouse only to find not only that she/he does not want to hear but that they then start sticking labels like 'Opposer' on the UBM and then the UBM finds that his/her loved one is treating them as the enemy and closing their ears to anything the UBM says about the org. So we all learn the hard way.

Newcomers to TTATT: Beware of "New Study Mode"!
by Londo111 inweve all heard it.
a person starts studying with jehovahs witnesses and love what they are learning so much that they cant stop talking about it.
bubbling with enthusiasm, they spill everything they are learning with their friends and family...or anybody who will listen.

Shared some TTATT with my wife and now she wants us to have a weekly personal bible study
by suavojr inhere is the situation.... a young 19 year old in our congo had a fallout with his parents because of all the restrictions and jw dogma and moved out of the house last wednesday.. to make the story short, the parents went running to the elders and what was the comfort?.
coe said: i saw that coming!
your son never reached out to get baptized.. then the other elder said: don't worry, you still have one left that will be saved.

It just goes to show how much pressure (and guilt) the org is heaping on JW parents to indoctrinate the kids (and save them). The org realises that in the Developed World that is the only hope for new members. So insidious!

Yes it looks like they have found it in the Indian Ocean (not that close to Australia: 1200-1500 miles away). That might explain why no mobile calls were received from passengers - by the time they realised something was wrong they were beyond mobile coverage. So it looks like it was flying on autopilot and ran out of fuel. But foul play by someone who knew what they were doing looks likely given the change of coordinates and the low altitude flying over the Malay peninsula.

John 20:25 to see the reference to removing nails from Jesus's hands to show how what the Borg teaches is inconsistent with a literal reading of the Bible. If you look at the picture of Jesus on the stake in the Teachers Book there is only one nail!

Sff - I am so sorry to hear this. It is just awful that your mother can behave like this. The worse part about it is that the cult has got her thinking that in behaving so cruelly she is being pious and righteous. It is just so despicable. It is very painful to realise that your loved one places more loyalty with a bunch of misleading and manipulative old men in New York than their own children. It makes me so angry.
Take care and try to get through this horrible experience. It must make losing your Dad that much more painful. Fraz

GB And Change: Lessons From Soviet History
by metatron ini read an interesting book - "spymaster" by tennent bagley in which he offers a biography of a senior consultant to the kgb, based on long interviews with a man who was once his enemy (sergey kundrashev).
i believe the book proves some powerful insights into the workings of secretive totalitarian cults.. there are many parallels between the two organizations: they were both born out of 1914 events, they addressed each other as comrade/brother, they encouraged youth to become "pioneers/red pioneers", they were started as very individualistic (revolutionaries) -were then taken over and structured by an amoral thug-dictator (stalin/rutherford) , worshipped the "party/organization", emphasized collective thought over the individual, and ended up ruled by an elderly politboro/governing body - who were forced to contend with disruptive change.. .
but here's where the similarities get interesting:.

metatron - the war in Afghanistan (and rebellion in Eastern Eurpoe) created a crisis as almost every family in the Soviet Union lost a family member and the military themselves were extremely disillusioned. As a result the leadership felt they had no choice but to offer major reform to avolid a bloody counter-revolution. It will probably take a similar shock to finally put the WBTS to the sword. Because the WBTS does to have citizens, it can afford to le tthe disaffected leave as long as they do not communicate with continuing members. Also it allows them to expand into new markets in the Developing World. While the WBTS is an authoritarian regime it is more like a corporation than a stagte which makes it more adaptable. I suspect the thing which will bring it down in the end is money and so it is the stagnation in the financial growth and resources of the corporation which gives the most cause for hope.

The Tower ate many Baby Boomers
by Alex Delta ini do some thinking every once and a great while and had a little brain storm which to most of you is just a cloudy sky.
looking back into history i put one and two together and see that the baby boomers came to be after the 4 first false prophecies of the tower which were in 1914, 1915, 1925 and 1945. after all this jazz happens they have a huge fall out and change and twist their doctrine to set up their next sales pitch, and wouldn't you know it, who's there for the towers perfect meal, baby boomers, the tower chew's away and gets pretty full for they're plenty of them, those ingredient were perfect.
these people grew up with wars, tons of protest's, scandals you name it there was plenty of things happening to them, add a little this and a dash of that and that's what the tower loves to feed on the feared.

BOTR - to suggest that all baby boomers were long haired anti-establishment hippys strikes me as a bit of generalisation. I get the feeling from being on JWN that a lot of folks on here are in their 50s and 60s, i.e. baby boomers and I think the OP has a point in saying that the same thing that drove the counter culture, namely war and conlfict (the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the war in Vitenam, the rise of Communist China etc.) and the serach for meaning in a chaotic world was grist to the Watchtower mill. Certainly the growth figures for the 70s and 80s would tend to support the hypothesis.

Donny - there is a good chance that's where Jon Preston will end up (like most of us here on JWN) but at least he needs to go and test the water with other faiths and let him draw his own conclusions. Greetings in non-belief Fraz

Why limit yourself to Christian faiths? Maybe look at what the Buddhists teach as well. You now have a unique opportunity to research, contemplate and choose what you believe - good luck out there but beware of charlatans and dogmatists.

My prediction on this thread 3 days ago that one of the pilots killed the others then headed it into the Indian Ocean and set the plane on autopilot and then committed suicide himself and it kept flying until it ran out of fuel is starting to look pretty good.
